To say my skincare regime is a high maintenance would be an understatement. Anyone who has ever lived or traveled with me is shocked by the amount of products and time spent pampering. When my husband and I first moved in together he would yell from the bedroom, “What are you doing in there it’s been 15 minutes?!” I would shout back “do you want me to look old when I am?”

As someone with freckly fair sensitive combination skin I learned at an early age the importance of taking care of my face. I wanted to share the products I use, so you can put your best face forward.

For cleansing
I use a few different facial cleansing products throughout the week. I only use oil free products to prevent breakouts. In the morning I alternate between Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash  and Clean & Clear Oil Free Deep Action cleansers 4 days a week. The Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash foams for a deep clean without leaving my skin feeling dry. When using the Clean & Clear I let it sit on my skin as it has a minty refreshing smell and awakens my face on those tired mornings.

Acne cleanser

Two days a week I use PanOxyl. My dermatologist recommended this to my when I suffered from mild acne in my mid 20s. I apply about a nickel sized amount to my face, rub it in until it foams then let it sit for 20 seconds before rinsing. My dermatologist advised me to let it sit for the 20 seconds until it’s absorbed into the skin. If you read the directions on the box, they advise you keep it on for 2 minutes while rubbing continuously. When I tried this approach my skin was left dry and peeling, but it is worth experimenting to see what works best for you.

Once a week I exfoliate my face, which removes all the dead skin. I experimented with a few different products and by far my favorite is the Clinique Exfoliating Scrub. I use a pea size amount and gently rub it all over my face. It has a fine grainy texture, so it is gentle and leaves my skin glowing. In the past I used those drugstore apricot scrubs until I was told by my etesian those are too harsh.

After cleansing, I always apply toner in the morning and evenings. Toner is great for my oily skin and erases any residue not removed from cleansing.

Two great alcohol free options, which are great for sensitive and dry skin are Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Toner Thayers Alcohol Free Rose Petal and Neutrogena Oil Free Toner.

My drugstore go to is Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple-Action Toner. For a department store toner I like Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2, which comes in 4 varieties depending upon your skin type.

Protecting your skin from the sun is the easiest way to prevent aging. I protect my skin by wearing a moisturizer with sunscreen in it. Every morning I apply Clinique Repairwear Uplifing Firming Cream for combination skin on my face and neck.  It has 15 SPF and is oil free. The Clinique skincare line has products for individual skincare needs, so this product is also available for those with dry to very dry skin.

Some other moisturizers I have used and like are Origins A Perfect World with an SPF of 25 and a more budget friendly choice is Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture.

Eye cream

I started using eye cream in the morning in my mid 20’s. Until then I had overlooked my eye area since wrinkles were not a huge concern. But, I began to noticed that my eyes always looked tired. As it turns out I was under moisturizing. Now every morning I apply Clinique All About Eyes, which helps reduce puffiness, keeps the skin hydrated as well as reduces the appearance of fine lines. I use my ring finger to gentle massage the cream under my eye and above the lid. This is a great solution because it does not leave a greasy residue and won’t cause concealer or eye shadow to settle or clump.
